Defense is one of the toughest niches to break into on Google. Search results for terms like “tactical UAV systems” are dominated by established manufacturers, defense publications, and authoritative educational sites — competition a single brand website can’t easily outrank. Reddit offered a different route: instead of taking those sites on head to head, we gave the brand a place in the community discussions Google shows right alongside them.

Client

The client designs and manufactures unmanned systems for the defense sector, backed by an in-house R&D team.

Goal

The client wanted Reddit discussions mentioning the brand to rank in Google’s US results for three queries: “drone technology,” “reconnaissance drone,” and “tactical UAV systems.” These are the searches English-speaking users run when they research drone technology and military UAVs.

Task

Two things made this harder than a typical Reddit campaign:

  • The competition. For short, broad queries like these, Google favors defense manufacturers, industry publications, and authoritative educational sites.
  • The lack of existing threads. Military UAVs are a narrow topic that rarely comes up on Reddit, so there were very few relevant discussions to join.

The task was to get brand mentions into the top results anyway — within two months and on a $1,000 budget.

Strategy

With so few existing threads to work with, the campaign centered on our own posts.

Phase 1: Question-led posts. We published four posts in relevant subreddits, each built around the topic of a target query. Every post asked the community a question. That format draws people into the discussion, and it closely matches how users phrase their searches.

Phase 2: The brand comes up in the replies. Under each post, we left one comment mentioning the brand. Keeping the brand out of the post itself meant the thread read as a genuine community question, with the brand surfacing in the answers.

Phase 3: Boosting activity. Each post then received 10 more comments with no brand mention. More activity pushes a post up in Reddit’s own rankings and makes the thread more visible to search engines.

Phase 4: Mentions in existing threads. We also added four brand-mention comments to relevant existing threads. There weren’t enough of these threads to build a strategy around, so they played a supporting role.

Results

“tactical UAV systems” — #3. The thread ranks third in Google’s US results, behind only two specialized defense UAV manufacturers.

“drone technology” — #5. This is the broadest of the three queries, and its results are dominated by educational guides and reference pages. The Reddit thread holds fifth place among them.

“reconnaissance drone” — #20. The thread made it onto the second page of Google results.

“reconnaissance drone” — #20. The thread made it onto the second page of Google results.

Result: top Google rankings in the US in two months, on a $1,000 budget.

Why It Worked

The posts matched search intent. Each one asked a question on the topic of a target query — the same kind of question a user types into Google. That makes the thread a relevant result in its own right, not just a place where the brand gets mentioned.

The threads worked like real discussions. The brand showed up in a reply rather than in the post, and the extra comments kept each thread active. A relevant question, an active conversation, and a brand mention in context — that combination is what gives a Reddit thread a chance to rank.

Few competing threads. In a narrow niche, a new thread doesn’t have to beat dozens of similar Reddit discussions to get noticed.

Conclusion

Defense isn’t a niche most marketers associate with Reddit. Yet two months of work put brand mentions among the top results for the queries the client cared about, right next to established manufacturers and industry resources.

For a defense company, the payoff is visibility more than traffic: someone researching tactical UAVs now sees not just competitors’ websites, but a community discussion where the brand comes up. The same approach works in any specialized, expert-driven niche where the search results seem locked up by the big players.

How One Reddit Thread Pushed Two Negative Discussions Out of Google’s Top Results for a Software Company
For an established software development company, the first thing prospects saw when they searched for its reviews wasn’t client feedback — it was two negative Reddit threads. Neither could be deleted, and both ranked high enough to shape first impressions before any sales conversation began. Two months and $315 later, a single optimized thread had […]

How Reddit Promotion Took an Email-Finder Platform to Google’s #1 Spot — and Into AI Answers
Ask an AI assistant which email-finder tool to use, and the answer rarely leans on rankings — it leans on sources. A brand can hold a strong position in classic search and still be invisible to an AI assistant, simply because it never entered the discussions the assistant reads from. That was the exact gap […]
