A single Reddit thread was controlling the entire conversation around the brand.

When users searched for “[Brand] reviews”, the first result in Google wasn’t the company’s website, Amazon listings, or professional reviews. It was a highly visible negative Reddit discussion.

The thread had accumulated engagement, trust signals, and search visibility over time. As a result, potential customers researching the brand encountered criticism before seeing any official information.

The objective wasn’t to remove the thread. It was to replace it.

This case shows how a single Reddit asset displaced a negative discussion from Google’s first position while simultaneously becoming a source cited by AI systems.

Client

A US-based consumer electronics company specializing in wireless headphones and audio accessories.

The brand sells primarily through Amazon and its own ecommerce website.

Goal

Remove a reputation bottleneck created by a negative Reddit thread ranking #1 in Google for the branded query:

[Brand] reviews

Task

Build a controlled Reddit asset capable of outranking the existing negative thread for a high-intent branded search query.

The replacement asset needed to:

  • Rank above the negative discussion.
  • Maintain credibility within Reddit’s ecosystem.
  • Generate positive brand exposure without appearing promotional.
  • Create content eligible for AI retrieval and citation.

Platform: Reddit
Niche: Consumer Electronics (USA)
Query: “[Brand] reviews”

Strategy

Rather than fighting Reddit’s authority, we used it.

The goal was to create a stronger discussion that matched search intent more effectively while accumulating the engagement signals necessary to compete with the existing thread.

Phase 1. Creating the Replacement Asset

We published a new thread in a relevant subreddit with an organic discussion format.

Instead of publishing obvious promotional content, the thread was structured around user experience and product feedback.

The discussion was intentionally balanced.

The objective was to create a conversation that appeared natural to both Reddit users and Google’s ranking systems.

This format allowed positive experiences to emerge without creating moderation risks associated with direct advertising.

Phase 2. Building Engagement Signals

A Reddit thread rarely ranks because of content alone.

Visibility is heavily influenced by engagement patterns.

To establish authority, we built discussion activity around the thread through multiple participant accounts representing different perspectives.

Comments covered:

  • Product quality.
  • Long-term usage experience.
  • Comparisons with alternatives.
  • Customer support interactions.
  • Purchasing decisions.

As engagement increased, one of the most informative comments became the highest-voted response within the discussion.

That comment would later become important for AI visibility.

Phase 3. Search Position Displacement

Once the thread accumulated sufficient engagement and relevance signals, Google began reevaluating which Reddit URL best satisfied the query.

The new discussion gradually replaced the negative thread for the branded search term.

Instead of users landing on criticism-first content, they were now entering a discussion where multiple experiences were represented and the overall sentiment was substantially more favorable to the brand.

The negative thread remained indexed.

It simply lost the most valuable position.

Results

Google TOP-1 Captured

The new Reddit thread reached the first position in Google for the branded query.

The previously dominant negative discussion was displaced from the top result.

Result:

  • Negative thread removed from TOP-1.
  • Controlled Reddit asset takes TOP-1.
  • Positive brand visibility restored for review-related searches.

AI Citation Achieved

The most visible comment within the new thread began appearing in AI-generated answers.

Large language models and AI search systems increasingly rely on highly ranked Reddit discussions as source material.

Because the thread ranked prominently and accumulated engagement, one of the key comments became part of the retrieval layer used by AI systems when discussing the brand.

This created a secondary benefit beyond traditional SEO:

The same asset influencing Google rankings also began influencing AI-generated brand narratives.

Why It Worked

Google increasingly treats Reddit as a trusted source for commercial research queries.

When users search for:

  • “[brand] reviews”
  • “[brand] worth it”
  • “[brand] reddit”
  • “[brand] experiences”

Reddit discussions often compete directly with official websites and review platforms.

That creates a reputation risk when negative content ranks.

But it also creates an opportunity.

Rather than attempting to suppress criticism directly, we introduced a stronger competing asset that better satisfied search intent while maintaining the authenticity expected on Reddit.

Once Google selected the new discussion as the better result, both search visibility and AI visibility shifted accordingly.

Conclusion

A single Reddit thread was controlling the brand’s reputation for one of its highest-intent search queries.

By creating a competing discussion, building engagement, and strengthening relevance signals, we replaced the negative result with a controlled asset that reached Google’s first position.

The outcome extended beyond traditional ORM.

The same thread that captured TOP-1 in Google also entered the AI citation ecosystem, allowing the brand to influence not only what users see in search results, but also what AI systems say about the company.

In modern reputation management, ranking content is only half of the objective.

The other half is controlling the sources that AI chooses to trust.
